And the award goes to...

TechPB put up an interesting post recently. You can see it here - TechPB Awards  As the title suggests it's a list of Mike Phillips best of paintball.  Mike (The Commander and Chief of TechPB) is a scary guy so I don't like to mess with him but I'm sure he would agree when ever you see a "Best Of" list you have to wonder whose advertising dollar the list is aimed at.  (I can say this here cause I'm pretty sure Mike doesn't give a rat's behind about what anybody thinks.)

Paintbal/? orings, trac tire, 2x4+, don't forget the milk...

I'm a note taker.  I recycle scrap paper by cutting it into quarters.  There's a pile of these clean on one side, quarter size scraps of paper setting on the corner of my desk and by the end of the day ten or twelve or more of these scraps are scattered around the pro shop covered with cryptic, nearly undecipherable scrawl.

Paintball? Let's try this...

Way back in May I mentioned I was going through a paintball writing dry spell.  13FT suggested I throw a few none paintball related posts at you all.  So, on that note, here's a movie review.

First this -  In any relationship there has to be some give and take and the occasional compromise so I found myself at a chick flick - "All About Steve".  My lady friend and I both like Sandra Bullock (for different reasons, of course) so we figured it would be a safe bet.

So, as a service of T-Square Paintball Paintblog, here is a review of  "All About Steve."

It sucked.

Next week,  Inglourious Basterds, I hope (but more likely "The Time Traveler's Wife")!

Paintball's "Badrevrend"

It's always great to find like minded people in this sport I enjoy so much. Sometimes I feel like the lone wolf, ranting about rate of fire, the decline in sportsmanship, the lost "fun" factor and so many other topics. So it's always good to find folks like Reiner, Tomcat, Brules and others to share thoughts and ideas with. Here's another I recently came across:

The Badrevrand has a YouTube channel with all kinds of great stuff. I particularly like the "no more suckaz" series. I haven't viewed them all - I got a facefull of butt crack in one video and there was some horseplay in the safe zone in another but for the most part I like the guys style. Check it out.

Never relax…

Just when I think I have every item concerning safety covered I have a player come up with something brand new.

There he is, sitting at a table in the Pro-Shop working on his electronic Spyder. No big deal. I have guys working on guns in the Pro-Shop all the time. He's got the grip cover off and he's poking around the insides with something when suddenly the gun fires, sending the gun plug and the remnants of a paintball into the side of a counter.

Now, the gun was turned off mind you but I let him break the first rule of gun maintenance. NEVER WORK ON A GUN WITH CO2 OR HPA STILL ATTACHED. That's the number one NO-NO of all!

Turns out he was poking around inside with a screwdriver. He shorted something out and made the gun go off. Now I have to make another sign: Don't poke around the inside of your electronic gun with a screwdriver!

I'd ask, "What's next?" but I really, really, really don't want to know!

It's back!

What's back? What's that? A new gun? The SL-68 is where Tippmann earned their "tougher than nails" image. The original was made out of some kind of indestructible, cast, alien world carbonite. It was the gun of choice for nearly every paintball field in the world. It was the last "HURRAH" for pump action markers followed soon after by the first mass produced semi - The VM-68. It's fun. It's cool. It's retro. And it's back.

But $169 MAP?? They had to spoil it!

"Thumper" over at the mcarterbrown.com forum came up with an interesting question - "If you could rewind time, and make one change in the game, technology, people, or industry of paintball .. what would it be??"

Some suggestions include:

Make the penalties for cheating uber severe,
Get rid of all turbo/ramping modes,
...create a movement to standardize feednecks.

and my favorite - No batteries in the sport.

More paintball economics...

This is a list of the "Field Fees" for the five player teams that are going to World Cup 7 Oct thru 11 Oct. The fee does not include paint and if you show up with less than $1500 worth of gear (each) you are in for a hard go. A majority of the teams will play a total of less than eight minutes. Airfare. Hotel. Food. The things we do for our sport. Good luck to all.

Professional - $4250
Semi-Pro - $3250
DI RaceTo - 5 - $3150
DII RaceTo - 5 - $2900
DIII RaceTo - 4 - $2750

My paintball gun...

People often ask me what I shoot. I think they are hoping I will show them an Angel D7 ($1550) or a DLX Luxe ($1665) or a Planet Eclipse SL74 ($1995) or these days maybe a Breda M37 8mm Machine Gun replica by Real Action Paintball ($4999).

When I drag out my pride and joy I can almost sense the disappointment. But as they say, beauty (and functionality) is in the eye of the beholder.

Basic black 2002 vertical feed body
WGP chrome Swing Trigger
WGP ERGOnomic in-line reg
Chrome front block with WGP Tickler LP reg and 32 degree mini gauge
JAM Enterprise anti-chop bolt
Shocktech beaver tail
Custom Products Razor Drop w/ Mini on-off
13 inch ACI Zero Gravity Barrel
JT 12 volt Revolution hopper
Topped of with what ever HPA tank is available and has air

Everything else is stock. It all weighs in at just over 7 pounds without paint. When I run out of paint I can use it to knock down bunkers. I think it's silly when I see this kind of "picture and attributes" post in forums and such. Usually my reaction is, "So what. You spent $800 on a $200 gun that still shoots like a $200 gun."

I guess I could spend $1500+ on guns that still shoot like a $200 gun. But where's the fun in that.

YOU KNOW YOU'VE GOT BAD PAINT WHEN ...

the balls break -- when you pour them into your loader.

every bag of 100 come(s) with a free barrel swab from the manufacturer.

a three hundred round loader only holds one hundred when it's full.

a three hundred round loader holds five hundred when it's full.

like snow flakes; no two are alike.

STAY DOWN!

Maybe I put to much emphasis on GETTING OFF THE FIELD IMMEDIATELY when hit; to much urgency. Every weekend I see players, down in a crouch, who get hit and then STAND UP to scurry off the field, exposing themselves to stray rounds and crossfire.

It's like I tell people. If you get hit while running off the field with your gun up and yelling "HIT" I can go yell at the person who hit you. If you're strolling along, with your gun down, whispering your opponents position to your friends and get hit it's your own dumb fault.

Strange paintball...

This is a Strange Ordinance grenade. The M-69 has a 10 second delay to give you time to throw it. I'm not even sure if it's still made. Many years ago I bought a couple of Strange Ordinance M-72's that look the same as the one pictured here only it did not have a delay. To check it out before considering putting it out on the field I taped it to a small tree, ran about twenty feet of fishing line out and yanked away.

It made big bang. But I couldn't find the paint. What's a grenade for if it doesn't spray your opponent with paint? On closer inspection I found what looked like little green snot balls (sorry) clinging to anything it found within it's 20 foot blast range. Not very big balls but they were green and sticky and... well, they looked like snot balls.

My apologies to Strange Ordinance if they have since improved the M-72. I'm not even sure they are still around. I haven't purchased one again since the test. (Picture stolen from VintageRex.com)

Paintball's latest victim of the economy...

PaintballX3 reports that a major paintball manufacturer/distributor has laid off it's work force and will be closing the doors in a couple of weeks. They didn't want to say who it is right now but I could hazard a guess. I'll type the name right here>>_______ << in invisible computer ink and when the time comes I'll make it visible so that you can see I was right.

Hard times. Hard times indeed.

UPDATE:

Phew, that was close. I was afraid someone knew something I didn't and T-Square was on the block! So it seems the rumor started when Smart Parts laid of some employees. From there the internet took over and chicken little about had a stroke running around the paintball field. Smart Parts will survive. Anyone who knows Smart Parts' history can tell you that.

Check those dates...

There are a bunch of numbers on a CO2 tank. The two that are most important are the two numbers separated by a symbol (sometimes a @). The first number is the month your tank was "born". The second number is the year. CO2 tanks are out of date, can not be filled and must be inspected five years from that date. For example, this tank is out of date and can not be filled on the last day of January, 2014.

I am not trained nor do I have the elaborate testing machine to test them myself. There is a testing location in Little Rock that will test CO2 tanks for $29. Back when a 12 ounce tank cost over $45 it was worth the $29 to have it inspected. Now you can buy nearly any size CO2 tank for less than $29 so basically what you have after the inspection date is a handful of scrap aluminum (and a bit of brass).

Keep this date in mind when you find a good deal on EBay or locally. Nearly every CO2 tank you buy from EBay is out of date or very close. When you see a "great deal" always figure in the cost of a new tank and then do the figures again.

The only exception to the inspection date rule is CO2 tanks that are 2 inches or less in diameter. They, along with certain chrome moly tanks, are exempt from inspection at this time. Keep in mind the person you ask to fill your tank can refuse to fill any tank, even those within inspection date, if they feel the tank is not safe in anyway.

HPA tanks also have an inspection date but they are a bit more difficult to read. Some have a 3 year date while others have a 5 year date, which isn't always noted on the tank. Bring it in if you are not sure and I can try and figure it out for you.
