Sunday Paintball Funnies...

Yet again I'm stuck for a paintball funny.  Yesterday's post might have made a good funny except for it being so truly sad.  Maybe its the lousy weather.  Maybe it's the larger than normal moon. Somebody want to bail me out here?

Perfect?

The perfect paintball gun?

Go on Ebay and get yourself a used Tippmann Custom 98. Yes, I know. I constantly harp against buying anything on Ebay but here’s the deal. Ninety nine out of one hundred Tippmanns purchased on Ebay is going to be a good buy. This is a testament to Tippmann and the Custom 98’s bullet proof design.

It may not look pretty, especially the older models. The finish on the 98 is notorious for flaking and chipping. As long as some inquiring young mind has not cracked open the body out of curiosity or for cleaning chances are it will work or can be easily repaired.

But its ruggedness is not what makes it the perfect gun. Buy one brand new and it will run around $130. A used one on Ebay runs between $90 and $110. What makes the 98 perfect is when you get tired of it you can sell it on Ebay for between $90 and $110.

Nearly every other marker loses 50% of its value the moment you buy it. Some lose as much as 75%. That can amount to hundreds of dollars just for screwing a tank into the ASA.

The Tippmann Model 98 hardly loses values at all. Even the first 98’s that came out in 1998 command a premium resale price. It’s not often that you find something you can buy and sell at the same price. It’s like getting a paintball gun to use for free. The only thing that might make the 98 more perfect is if it appreciated in value.

But let’s not get greedy.

Things that make you want to wear a flak vest and a hard hat and work behind bullet proof glass!

So...what is wrong with this picture? Notice the part sticking out of the top of the regulator?  It's not suppose to be there.  What is it?  Better yet - is it permanent or is it ready to pop out with about 800 PSI behind it?

It's the plunger part of a remote hose on/off.  The player turned the knob past the point of on and the plunger kept plunging till it wedged itself into the regulator top.  When he walked into the shop most new immediately what it was and dove down behind the counter.  Being the brave field owner I am, I snatched the

potential bomb from the player, told him to come back in about a half hour and went outside to defuse the thing.

After a bit of yanking and grinding and cleaning I managed to put everything right. I briefed the player not to turn the on/off knob past the point of on and all was well. Just another day at the field.

Tournament Paintball in Heaven?

Two buddies Bob and Earl were two of the biggest tournament paintball players in America.

Their entire lives, Bob and Earl discussed paintball history in the winter, and they pored over every NPPL and PSP score during the season. They played in as many tournaments as they could. They even agreed that whoever died first would try to come back and tell the other if there was tournament paintball in heaven.

One summer night, Bob passed away in his sleep after a particularly grueling tournament. He died happy. A few nights later, his buddy Earl awoke to the sound of Bob's voice from beyond.

"Bob, Is that you?" Earl asked.

"Of course it's me," Bob replied.

"This is unbelievable!" Earl exclaimed. "So tell me, is there tournament paintball in heaven?"

"Well, I have some good news and some bad news for you. Which do you want to hear first?"

"Tell me the good news first."

"Well, the good news is that yes there is tournament paintball in heaven, Earl."

"Oh, that is wonderful! So what could possibly be the bad news?"

"You're playing the snake tomorrow."

Who gets the pork and who gets the beans...?

The economic doom and gloom people are starting to get on my nerves. Still, times are tough and many of us are having to cut back on certain things. I eat out a little less and don't go to the river to fish near as much. Premium TV channels are not as important anymore. Nor is call waiting on the phone.

Yet, while most of us tighten our belts and micro-manage our money the government just keeps on rolling along.

$188,000 just went to the Lobster Institute. The group’s website says, "The LOBSTER INSTITUTE is a cooperative program of research and education with the lobster industry at the University of Maine." One of their big projects is the development of lobster dog biscuits.

Hawaii recently picked up $10,000,000 for the National Defense Center of Excellence for Research in Ocean Sciences and $2,000,000 for Brown Tree Snakes. I'm pretty sure Hawaii has no snakes.

The National Drug Intelligence Center picked up a cool $23,000,000 even though the Department of Justice has repeatedly asked Congress to shut them down because its operations are a duplication of the DOJ's efforts.

Four Presidential Libraries have $19,942,000 for improvements.

$7,556,660 has been earmarked for grape and wine research.

And the hits just keep on coming. Citizens Against Government Waste 1-800-BE ANGRY

Ebay paintball bargains...

Here's a brief guide to Ebay paintball shopping:

If it's a CO2 tank it will be out of inspection date

If it's an HPA tank it will be out of inspection date.

If it's a stack tube blow back marker it will have a bad hammer oring and/or leak from the barrel.

If it's an electronic marker it will only shoot on days that contain the letter "U", ie: Tuesday, Thursday, etc.

If it says "New" it will have a few scratches.

If it says "Used" it will have at least one broken part (not necessarily a critical part).

If the listing says "I don't know anything about paintball guns" or the variation "I don't have air to test this gun but it cocks fine" expect the marker to be DOA.

The phrase "Mad ups!" means the marker comes with a bunch of useless modifications that do nothing but raise the common sense price of the marker 3 fold. (Possibly bonus - Stripping and selling the mad ups separately will often pay for the entire stock marker.)

The Big Splat

Scientists believe it was just over 13 billion years ago that our creator kick started us toward what we are today. It all started in a total void. I'm talking total here folks. Nothing, nada, zip. Time didn't exist. Not even a warped Twilight Zone version. There was no light but it wasn't dark. Dark is the result of an absent of light but in this particular area of nothing there was no light to declare absent. Which is not to say it was bright white since white is an absent of color, non of which existed there, either.

Anyway, something about the size of a walnut was tossed into this nothing and since nature abhors a vacuum (not really a vacuum because a vacuum is the result of... never-mind) this walnut exploded in an attempt to fill this nothing.

The "Big Bang."

Smart Parts press release...

Loyalhanna, PA – January 6, 2009 – Paintball manufacturer Smart Parts, Inc. is temporarily shutting down all manufacturing and sales operations in order to facilitate a corporate restructuring. During this time, the company will not be able accept or process orders, ship or receive products or perform repairs. The restructuring process is expected to be completed by the end of January 2010.

“It is important that people do not send equipment in for service during this time,” said company Vice President, Adam Gardner. “Our buildings will not be staffed during the restructuring, so there will be no one there to receive packages. They will automatically be refused and returned to the sender.

“To the players, field owners and store owners, please know that we appreciate your support and are looking forward to a fresh start for the 2010 paintball season. We apologize for any inconvenience this short closure may cause, and hope to make it up to you in the future.”

Mother Nature is being a mother...

A foot of water on the pro-shop floor in October. And again this past Christmas day. Water, water everywhere. And now? Nothing. Not a drop! Frozen pipes. For the first time in fifteen years I had the field manager call a group and tell them not to come this weekend. Saturday's temperature is suppose to top out at 25 degrees. Look for me in the proshop next to the wood stove. Field's closed this weekend.

Paintball Whatzit exposed...

Awhile back I offered up this odd little item and asked folks to try and identify it. A few T-Square locals knew what it was. I allowed some of them to borrow it under the threat of a long, painful, agonizing flogging if I didn't get it back. Unless you have had to stand in line at a Smart Parts booth to have a Shocker repaired I didn't expect anyone to correctly come up with its function.

There is a small, hard oring on a Shocker SFT/NXT marker that is nearly impossible to replace.  It's hard to stretch onto the bolt and I would usually end up nicking or breaking it. It's a crucial oring andcan not be replaced with just any oring. I saw this little "rocket nose cone" tool one year at World Cup and rushed home to try and make my own. I have no talent or tools for metal work so I tried to make one out of wood with no success.

One of my players came to my rescue when he mentioned his Dad was a machinist.  After a little negotiating I ended up with a cool tool that slips over the end of the Shocker bolt and allows me to ease the oring up the nose cone till it reaches the bolt.

It works great, no it's not for sale and it's proof again that any job is easy if you have the right tools.

Let me check my paintball horoscope...

No, I don't know how many walk ons we are going to have today.

There's no county fair or big concert in town, high school football season is over and the fish ain't biting. The price of gas is down and the wind is blowing in from the north east.

On the down side it's a bit cloudy and the mosquito count is up. It's not a pay day weekend and the moon is nearly full.

I'm not much for New Year resolutions.  I figure if you are going to resolve to do something and resolve to wait until the first of the new year you have already shown a lack of resolve.  If something needs to be done - quit smoking, save money, lose weight, what ever - get 'er done!  Don't wait for some future point on a calendar for motivation.

Sunday Paintball Funnies...

Upon his demise, a notorious tournament paintballer known for his rule bending found himself standing at the gates of the underworld.  Inside he found a dozen other players standing in a knee deep, putrid mix of stale beer, broken paintballs and cigarette butts.  It didn't seem very pleasant but he did notice they were all smoking and joking, drinking Red Bull and generally having a good time.

"Hmmm," he thought to himself.  "All the times I wiped and was shooting hot - this doesn't seem like a bad exchange for all the tournaments I won."

About that time he heard a voice boom from the back of the room. "ALL RIGHT MEAT HEADS! Breaks over.  Back on your heads!
