Too hot to play

It's too hot to play paintball. Too hot to fish. It has even been too hot to write. Almost. I recently jumped into a subject that I'm sort of emotionally connected to. You can see it here (scroll down for my comments) if you're interested. It turned out to be a rather tame debate. Maybe it's too hot every where for any kind of heated discord.

Disgruntled customers...

Disgruntled customers make a lot of different noises. The sound of SQUEALING TIRES is one I've keyed on lately. It happens at least once a week and already three times this week!

The field and store hours are on T2 brochures. The field and store hours are on the T2 phone message service. The field and store hours are posted on our T2 Welcome board. And for the folks that walk past the posted hours on the fence near the entrance and then stand outside the Pro-Shop beating on the door - the field and store hours are displayed in the window near the front door of the Pro-Shop.

I suppose if I drove all the way from Benton or Maumelle to get a CO2 tank filled, only to find the shop closed, I might be a little pissed too - at myself. It's been along time since I've taken out my frustrations on vehicle tires, maybe 35 years ago, when I was 17, in my Dad's truck!

I'm closed Monday and Tuesday, people. Get over it!

Multi-use Transmorgrifier...

Here is something I see a lot (The situation - not the marker!!). This hot little EBay item is described as "well maintained and would be great for a professional player or make a great kit for someone just starting out."

So which is it? Is this a marker for a professional player or a player just starting out?

Fact is, a professional player would not be caught dead with this thing and a new player wouldn't know which end the paintballs come out.

On the other hand I give it an A+ for "shock and awe." Anyone who has seen my "Tankinator" or "Frankenray" knows I have a soft spot for Rube Goldberg designs.

I think I'm going to bid on it just to get it off the market. It looks dangerous!

Yet another...

Just what the paintball world needs. Another "rifled barrel". Will we ever learn? There is nothing, NOTHING, a barrel can do to make a paintball go further (except the Flatline) or make it more accurate (especially the Flatline). Barrel manufacturers - STOP, STOP, STOP messing with the noobies' heads!

Old stuff...

Here's another oddity from VintageRex.. The Nova was based on technology used to build those t-shirt shooters you see at arena events. It kind of lost its charm when word got out that it had a tendency of blowing apart at the rear end.

Frankenstein...

About ten years ago, one cold, quiet night, I got bored. This was the result. Under the bondo (yes, the stuff you use to patch car fenders) and paint and hoses and adaptors is a Brass Eagle Stingray. Field strip knobs (to replace the pins), rear cocking, bottom line set up with expansion chamber, ported barrel, trigger adjust (ahead of its time!), polished and ported! When I think back to those early field owner days, when I had 75 Stingray rentals, I shudder and shake my head. I've often considered entering this one in an ugly gun contest.

Number one...

Just a quick Heinz 57 (catch-up) post while I'm enjoying some down time:

When someone brings a gun into the shop the number one answer to the question, "How did it get like this?" is "I let a friend borrow it."

When I open up a gun and find missing pieces and ask, "Have you taken your gun apart?" the number one response is, "No."

The number one response when I ask, "What kind of oil do you use?" is "Huh?"

When I have to ask, "Who used Super Glue on this o'ring?" the number one answer is, "Dad."

When asked, "Why did you shoot the ref?" the answer is always, "I didn't see him."

MOM. WOW.

You might think feed necks (the piece that sticks up from the top of a paintball gun that holds the hopper) would be a standard size or at least feed tubes (the part that sticks down from the bottom of the hopper and connects to the feed neck) would be a standard size but of course they are not. Hoppers will either fit loose, fit just right but become loose over time or they will not fit at all.

"Clamping" feed necks help. They adjust to fit. But even clamping feed necks vary in how large they open and how small they clamp.

It’s all fun and games till…

Question for backyard players:

Do you know how fast your "friends" are shooting at you?

I would NEVER consider playing with anyone that has not had their gun chronographed.

Getting hit by a paintball at over 300 feet per second can cause permanent scars. It can also punch a hole through a mask. Not to mention the damage it can do to your marker.

I have a hopper that I keep on my work bench. It has a hole punched through it from a "hot" paintball. A human skull is about the same thickness as the hopper.

At T-Square we chrono every rental gun and every personal gun at the start of every game day. We also play at 280 feet per second or below.

So, just how fast are your friends shooting at you? Mom, how fast is your child's friend shooting at him? Dad, how fast are you shooting at your son?

Big balls...

Big paintballs that is. What were you thinking?

Both of the round, spherical (not the quarter), colorful items in the picture above started out life as a 68 caliber paintball. The one on the right is fresh out of the box. The one on the left has been outside, on the ground and collecting moisture for three days.

Pull the trigger on the ball on the right and it will rocket down the barrel as it is supposed to. The one on the left will not. In fact, it won't even pass through the hopper feed neck.

It's too big!

Duh!

Even someone with just a minimum understanding of the "round-peg-in-a-square-hole" concept, or in this case the "large-round-object-through-a-small-hole concept, should be able to figure this one out.

Yet every weekend someone (both youngsters and adults) will scoop big balls off the ground, put them in their hopper and then wonder why their gun fires but no balls come out.

I use to go up to them and clear the gun, remove the offending big balls from the hopper, and then explain why it's not a good idea to try and recycle paintballs.

Here lately I clear the gun, explaining why it's not a good idea to recycle paintballs from the ground and then hand the gun back saying, "If the gun stops working because of big balls again you are on your own."

In most cases they figure it out and I'll see them hunkered down behind a bunker clearing the remaining big balls from the hopper. Sometimes they remain clueless and spend the rest of the day dry firing and wondering why everyone else is using way more paint than they are.

I've promised myself I would show more patience this year. After all, I can't expect players to know ALL of the intricacies of paintball.

I'm going to try very, very, very hard to keep that promise.

The game…

Paintball is a game of skill. It's also a game of honesty and integrity.

When you are "hit" you call yourself out.

Imagine if ball players were responsible for calling their own balls and strikes or football players were left to determine on their own if they stepped out of bounds. How about race car drivers counting their own laps? Paintball is one of the very few games that place nearly all the responsibility for the game's direction and order on the player.

Sure there are referees on the paintball field, but usually no more than 1 or 2 who are mainly concerned for the safety of a dozen or more players. When you are all alone in a bunker and spot that quarter size splotch of paint on your leg it's real tempting to just reach down and wipe it off. Or when hit on the back; did it bounce or break? And if it broke is it a quarter size hit? Awww, who cares. Keep playing. It's "just a game".

Fortunately most players, because it really is "just a game", will call themselves out or ask a referee for a paintcheck. They don't consider the walk back to the safe zone as a walk of shame. Instead they show off their hits and consider them front line "badges of honor". Little white or pink or blue reminders that it is just a game.

Play safe. Play fun. Play fair.

Freaks of nature...

After ranting a couple of posts back about how I only sell the best paintballs here at T-Square my daughter found this little gem in a factory sealed bag of 500 this past weekend.

To be fair, it was not found in our field paint but rather in a box of "backyard" paint that I sell the economy minded player.

It's actually two paintballs that were found stuck together. The bottom one is fairly intact and round while the top one is flattened and shaped into a perfect little hat! (The black marker features were added by one of our artistic field workers.)

Not necessarily something that made me mean and grumpy. In fact, I almost smiled when I saw it!

The way it goes.

At the water cooler or school locker:

(wannabee) "Yeah, I'm on a paintball team."

(admiring friends) "OOOOH. That's so cool.

(wannabee) "Oh yeah. Me and the team will be heading out to Huntington Beach next year."

(admiring friends) "AAAAAH. You're so cool.

(wannabee) "And I'll probably be voted team captain by then."

(admiring friends) WHOOOO. "We feel cooler just standing next to you."

On the practice field:

(wannabee) "Where the heck is Jim?"

(team mate 1) "He has detention/has to work overtime."

(team mate 2) "Hey, does anyone know how to fix this POS (enter favorite marker name here)."

(wannabee) "Are we even going to have enough to practice?"

(team mate 1) "We should vote on team captain today and call it quits."

(team mate 3) "I'm not playing if he's (glaring at wannabee) going to be captain."

(team mate 2) "My Mom/Wife needs to know if we are going to that 3 man tourney next week."

(team mate 1) "No way, man. That would be our first game. They would kick our butts up there."

(wannabee) "Ok, look. Let's get some kinda practice in. Who brought the paint?"

(team mate 3) "Not me."

(team mate 2) "I though it was your turn."

(team mate 1) "No way. I don't have any money."

(wannabee) "This sucks."

(team mate 2) "Let's go to my house and play the new Hastings game I just got."

(team mate 3) "Yeah, your Mom/Wife is home right? She's HOT!"

(team mate 2) "STFU"

1-2-3-4-5-6-7...

I have one of those fields that still offer 100 round bags of paintballs. At many fields you're only choice is a bag of 500 since that's how they come from the manufacturer. Once a week here at T-Square one of us sits and uses a 100 round cup to dip into the 500 round bags and pour 100 paintballs into a baggie. Over and over and over again. It's a bit monotonous but it's a chance to sit back, maybe watch some TV, and just enjoy the day.

Every now and again some wise guy will take their bag and ask if there is really 100 paintballs in the bag. Normally my response is, "Well you just sit there and count them and if you're short I'll give you free paintballs." Usually it ends there.

This past weekend someone took me up on the counting.

"There's not 100 paintballs in that bag."

"Well you just sit there and count them.  If you're short I'll give you free paintballs."

And danged if he didn't. Right there in front of me.

When he got to 100 and still had around 8 balls left in the bag he went off and disappeared into the crowd.

Seems like I have been giving away free paint all along. Eight balls at a time!

Some of our more interesting repairs...

The classic gun repair is the two minute cleaning. I'm handed a gun that a player thinks is a worthless piece of dog poo, squeegee out the goopy Wallyworld paint, oil it and hand it back working. The player looks at me like I just turned chicken nuggets into gold.

I've had this conversation many times; "No. Tanks you buy at Wallyworld do not come filled. That's why it doesn't work."

Another is what I call the "click and bump." That's where you dry fire to test it and when the hammer goes forward you hear a BUMP. (You should hear a CLICK as the hammer strikes the metal valve stem.) It takes about 30 seconds to fix this one and involves taking the gun apart and putting the pieces back in the proper order (hammer going in first instead of the bumper).

And then there's the, "It won't work."

"Change the battery."

I like the, "My ball only goes out about 4 feet and then drops," problem. Pull out the bolt, turn it right side up and it works like a champ. Fifteen seconds tops.

"You fixed it? How'd you do that?"

Magic... You're welcome!

So, what did these guys want?

I'm sitting in my office at midnight last night and I spot a car in the parking lot on my security monitor. I go to my upstairs window in time to see two guys get out of the car (there's a light in the parking lot) and walk directly to a spot at the edge of the lot where there is a pile of rocks and old bricks. I spotlighted them as they were walking toward the Pro-shop and they froze in there tracks. They said something to each other that I couldn't make out, jumped into the car and squealed the tires on there way out.

This morning I walked out to the parking lot to the spot where they were parked and found a brick laying on the ground.

They picked a perfect brick. It's completely covered with some sort of smooth, black, dry tar. I have fingerprints to go with the security tape!

What a world.
