Hey Mister. Can you spare a quarter...

So, I have a question for you all.

Here's the situation:

I have a small concession here at the field where, along with hot dogs, I sell bottled water, Gatorade, canned soda and assorted snacks. To keep it simple everything is priced the same - 75 cents. After running to Sam's and Walmart, stacking and storing, refrigerating and cooking, preparing and re-stocking and cleaning up afterward I figure I'm making a few cents on each item.

Here's the question:

Would you pay a dollar for these items? Should I charge convenient store prices or just break even, as in providing the food as an amenity for the players?

Everyone's got one...

I have allot of personal opinions about paintball and seeing how they are opinions I certainly don't expect anyone to take them for gospel. But I have to wonder sometimes. Had a young man and his Dad in the shop a few days ago. The boy asked for a particular gun by name. After telling him (with Dad within earshot) why I don't stock that gun and how it's unreliable and not very maintenance friendly he looked at his Dad and said, "Let's go see if they have it at (insert competitor's name here)!

The situation got me to thinking so I put together a poll. It's a bit self serving and I don't put much stock in polls - they are after all, personal opinions, but it might be nice to see what you think.

At what cost?

There may be some who might question why I would post this story here, after all, it's tough finding good paintball publicity most days. Maybe it's important that we remind ourselves where the bad publicity comes from. Maybe it's important that we are reminded of just what kind of "toys" we are playing with. The story and video should be considered PG material.

I get suggestions...

"Let people play with their own paint." I get this one every week. This player probably doesn't know why theater popcorn costs $5 a bucket either. I doubt I could explain.

"Let people use their own paintball gun even if they don't have a safety if they know how to use it." I have no idea how to answer this one, either. It leaves me speechless. So I'm going to put it up in the form of a poll. It's "yes" or "no". You get it or you don't. (Let's ignore the fact that for insurance reasons every gun must have a working safety.)

Should I let a player ("who knows how to use one") use a gun without a safety?

No

Cool Bunkers #5...

Here is another in my "Great Bunker" series. Sometimes a bunker can be more than just a bunker. It can be "thing". Bunkers can be buildings or aircraft or castles. In this case the bunker is a tank. Nothing exotic. It doesn't move or shoot nerf rockets. It's just a tank.

Which leads me to a thought I've been formulating for a couple of months. My Spool Field is in bad need of repair or replacement. I've been waiting on that moment of inspiration that has lead to the beginning of many of the projects here at T-Square. Recently it occurred to me that it might be cool to have two opposing tank forces, maybe 10 or 15 on a side, face to face, prepared for battle.

What do you think? (More cool bunkers - Bunkers #1, #2, #3, #4.)

A tank field?
Sounds cool.
Sounds goofy.
What ever!

Paintball and bird houses...

I like to build bird houses. Nothing elaborate. A few scraps of board, some brads and a small hole in the front.

Not everything is paintball. But as you can see, paintball tends to find its way into just about everything I do. A 68/4500 tank from KEE. An on/off and regulator from Custom Products, a couple of gauges, an ASA and a few odds and ends from a couple of old guns and a quick trip to Lowes and I'm good to go.

I think the birds like it.

Paintball gun for sale - CHEEP! [sic]

I haven't been on EBay in awhile. I'm still protesting the ridiculous changes they made to the buyer/seller feedback process. When I do take a look it's mainly for entertainment purposes. Here are some of the reasons given by sellers for why they have to part with their beloved paintball gear:

"Sons not responsible enough need to sell"
(The gun? Or your kid?)

"selling because i dont have time to use it and decided to make some money"
(Bought it on EBay for $100 and is hoping to double his money!)

"selling beacause i didnt really want it and i don't play anymore"
(Probably a gift from his wife in an attempt to get his butt off the couch!)

"Im am sellin this gun for one reason because i got a different one"
(Doesn't need a buddy gun cause he's got no buddies!)

"I have used it only a couple times which is why I am selling it"
(I took it apart and lost some pieces.)

"I bought this new to scare the squirrels and racoons away from my bird feeder, I gave up on that, it's a losing battle"
(For some real fun buy them paintguns and run a few one on four drills.)

Have you ever bought a paintball item on EBay?
Yeah. Good deal!
Yes. And I don't want to talk about it.
Don't care for it.
May consider it in the future.

Have you ever sold a paintball item on EBay?
Yeah. Made a fortune.
Broke even.
Yes. Don't want to talk about it!
No. Don't have an account.

Tiberius Arms sniper paintball...

Everything old becomes new again. Paintballs with fins were tried years ago with limited success. Most players did not have the patience to load them one at a time like musket balls. Various types of feed systems were tried but were given up on. Tiberius says a clip will be out soon that will fit their guns.

There's a YouTube video out showing the TechPB guys loading and shooting these things but like allot of TechPB videos the language is a bit raw so I can't recommend it (Man, I'm on a roll lately over trash mouths). Anyway, the idea of a finned paintball is interesting - I just don't want anyone to think it's unique. The guys in the video claim they are accurate but of course you can't see them fly and you can't see the hits. I remain skeptical.

Do you think a "one shot - one kill" paintball is possible?
Sorry. No!
Absolutely.
I wish.

Great paintball deals

What do you say to a player when he or she comes into the pro-shop with a to good to be true deal from a friend or from EBay and then pulls a "shoe box" Shocker out of a bag? What if it's a serial number #1 Angel with no battery that has wires hanging out of it that use to power the Intel-feed? Or an out of date HPA or CO2 tank? Or how about an Automag that has its trigger guard hacked off?

There are many things I could say but I don't. I might be mean and grumpy at times but I'm not heartless. It really breaks my heart to have to burst a person's bubble and tell them their deal is not so good. I try to educate people but to some it's considered just personal opinion and if some one is of the personal opinion that two Tritons with "all" the accessories is worth $175 then what are you going to do?

I have to admit, I've read a few sign posts and still took the wrong road home a time or two. I guess it's something we all have to go through. It's just that it feels personal when it happens to my customers.

Have you ever had a good paintball deal go bad?
No, I'm smarter than that!
Yes, I got burned.
I'm not saying.

Double your fun...

For the Automag lover in all of us. I'm not sure who built this thing, I'd love to give him (or her) credit. I am a bit concerned about the CO2 power. And I'm not sure if it's a thing or things. It might be two set ups fastened to one mount. What ever the case, I sure like those Crown Point barrels.

Is there anyone out there that uses and truly likes the Q-Loader?
