It's too hot to play paintball. Too hot to fish. It has even been too hot to write. Almost. I recently jumped into a subject that I'm sort of emotionally connected to. You can see it here (scroll down for my comments) if you're interested. It turned out to be a rather tame debate. Maybe it's too hot every where for any kind of heated discord.

Here's something I notice more and more lately when salesmen pitch me their new paintball products: "our new two piece design comes in one length to save on your inventory." There was a time, before the industry collapsed around its glutinous self, that suppliers couldn't come up with enough versions of a doodad to toss at us.
Customers expected you to stock every color, every length, every size, every bore, every pack, half finger AND full finger, every up, every gadget, every brand and every product regardless of whether they planned to purchase any of it.
Many pro-shop owners tried. Many died. Fads come and go. Today's color is tomorrows gag reflex. I still have a number of items sitting in the back that may never sell. I could always hold out and wait for the day when retro comes in vogue - bring out the purple drop forwards and spyder venturi bolts. I think I might even have a "black box" or two hidden away somewhere.

There is a possibility that my field will soon be annexed by a town that does not allow the discharge of firearms, to include paintball guns. A battle is brewing.

Somebody want to tell me why the failing economy in Greece negatively effects the economy in the US. And what's up with Miley Cyrus. Where are her parents? And did you know the US has the technology to make a kick ass Surface Oil Skimmer but can't because it steps on proprietary resources of "other" countries? Yet when offered foreign help we turned it down. Meanwhile some heiress in Florida has left her dog Conchita 3 million dollars while her son bitches about only getting 1 million.
Oh, and here's a good one from Rhode Island:
Christan Morales says her 8-year-old son, David, was assigned to make a crazy hat for his class at the Tiogue (TEYE'-ohg) School in Coventry. She says they brainstormed and he came up with an idea to glue small plastic Army figures to a camouflage hat with an American flag. But she says David was not allowed to wear the hat for the project. Morales says his teacher called her to say it wasn't appropriate because it had guns, violating a school ban on weapons and toy weapons.
Maybe it's the heat. I don't know what's to blame in Rhode Island or Florida or other places but here in Arkansas it's definitely the heat.

Read more...I hate being a killjoy but there are times when I feel obligated.
Let me explain.
A young boy and his grandfather came into the shop to have the boy's marker cleaned and readied for a weekend birthday gathering. After grabbing a gun plug from behind the counter and putting it in the barrel I went about the routine of showing them how to clean and care for the gun. When done I always chronograph the gun.
This is where I ask the grandfather or Dad or player if others in the party will be having their guns safety checked. I know the answer, of course, and point out that I would never play paintball with anyone who hasn't had their gun chronographed before playing. This brings the usual "Why?" and I go about explaining paintball safety.
This scenario plays out a dozen times a week, mainly on Fridays.
Oddly enough, it seldom draws much comment from the customers. I usually get a shrug or an assurance that they will be careful. I'm sure they consider my spiel self serving. I'm sure they think I'm trying to scare them so they will pay a lot of money to play at my field. Fact is I don't care if people want to play in their backyards with no regard for safety or supervision.
I really don't.

For anyone who might be keeping score - May 25 marked the first day I missed at least one post a day since Nov 24, 2008. I promised myself, back then, as an exercise in writing, that I would post at least once a day.
I didn't set a stop date, or what I have come to accept it as - a "take a break" date. It, along with life, just kinda crept up on me. I'm still here. Paintball will always be important to me. It's time for me to re-learn there is more to life than what is found inside gelatin encapsulation.

On a personal note: 25 years ago on this date (the actual date of the invasion) I graduated from Army Jump School. A "wingnut" and a parachute. Some combination.

Yet another...
Just what the paintball world needs. Another "rifled barrel". Will we ever learn? There is nothing, NOTHING, a barrel can do to make a paintball go further (except the Flatline) or make it more accurate (especially the Flatline). Barrel manufacturers - STOP, STOP, STOP messing with the noobies' heads!
