As a person who pays part of the mortgage with paintball affiliate sales, I have very much noticed a decline in the interest of the sport. Just taking a quick look at something like Google Trends(http://www.google.com/trends?q=paintball) you can see internet searches becoming less frequent. I also have a large paintball field directory and it seems almost impossible to keep up with the field closings. I really hope that this .50cal can have some type of effect on the sport.
Since the start ot the recession, at our field I have seen less regulars and seen our regulars less often, so I'm going to guess that your poll will indicate that it has affected people (sine I'm sure most of yor viewers are regular players). Overall, our field has not seen a decline, meaning that we have more first time and casual players.
I don't think this trend is due to more first timers are coming because we have less regualrs playing, but a person could jump to that conclusion. I think it has more to do with paintball being a relatively cheap form of entertanment and a great stress reliever that we are seeing more first timers. Players that play regularly are going to see paintball as one of their bigger overall expenses and a place they can cut back during the recession.
I believe the industry as a whole saw declines a few years before the recession started, but since we saw increases during those same years, I won't comment on thoughts on that here.
I probably dont play as much as I used to, but that has more to do with having a kid.
As soon as he is old enough to help out at the local field, nothing will keep me away.
